TransAmerica Bicycle Trail
The first bicycle touring route to cross the U.S. was developed and mapped for Bikecentennial, a mass bicycle tour across the country to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976.
Since 2014, the annual Trans Am Bike Race is held on the route.
Even wikipedia doesn't say much about the intervening years, like 2001.

How Does A Post-Run Beer Affect Recovery?
I (Julia) never ran more than half-marathons (13.1 miles, as opposed to 60 mile bike rides), but I do know beer is definitely dehydrating!
However, it has calories. For some folks, beer is less likely to cause nausea than flat water. It's is a mild pain killer. Thus it's offered as a finish line refreshment.
Coffee does not dehydrate as much as alcohol, provides some mild anti-inflammatory support, and maybe a small amount of performance enhancement.
Ultra-distance events require a lot of refueling during the work-out, but I doubt the rules are that different.
If you psychologically find beer more refreshing, go with your gut. Mind-body and all that.
